With Summer Break coming fast, I’ve been making all kinds of plans of places that would be fun to visit, family we want to see, and activities to do at home. I’m a big fan of just letting kids run and play unstructured, but I also love making crafts, so I’ve been gathering a list of ideas of crafts to do with the kids during summer break and as we make them, I will share them here with yall!
One thing my kids are really looking forward to is. We take mason jars out with holes cut in the lid and the kids catch as many fireflies and they can and put them in their jars. When we’re done, they always beg to bring their jars inside and use their new friends as a nightlight. I always say no because I hate the idea of the poor little guys being stuck in that jar, so I came up with this cute little jar they can play with and bring inside that looks like fireflies. This would be also be great for kids (and parents) who don’t want to catch bugs, but still want a little light to carry around! It’s super easy to make, and you could always let your kids catch real fireflies in the jar, then when they’re done they can let the fireflies go and trade them out for the string of lights.
SUPPLIES:
Plastic Mason Jars with lids
Wire
Tiny String Lights (fairy lights)
Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries in AA
Wire snips or Scissors
For the first few steps, you’ll be making the handle for the lantern. Take the lid off, and wrap your wire around the mouth of the jar. When you get back to the start, make a loop around the wire, and then bring it up to make a handle.
Next, you can add the lights! We’ve had these little “fairy” lights for awhile now and they were perfect for these lanterns, all I needed to do was add batteries.
I wrapped a fake magnolia leaf I had sitting around from a past project to hide the battery pack and on/off switch but even if you don’t hide it, you won’t be able to see it if it’s dark out at all (and your kids probably won’t mind anyways).
Done and ready for fun! Sawyer was the first to try one out and loved running around the yard with it at dusk.
It was perfect for a nightlight too, and since Energizer® Ultimate Lithium™ batteries are the #1 in performance, I don’t have to worry about them calling me to replace the batteries!
Our summer break starts NEXT week! Good thing I bought extra batteries, because I know we’ll be getting good use out of these little lanterns when we camp too! How soon are yall on summer break? I love hearing where yall are headed and what you’re up to this summer! Let me know in the comments!
