Last weekend, we took a little weekend getaway to St Simons Island, Georgia. I have shared in the past how St Simons and it’s neighboring Island, Jekyll Island, are one of our favorite places to go for a little family vacation. Brandon had Army commitments this weekend, so it was just me and the boys, and we brought my niece and nephew along to help out a little, but mostly just to make it even more fun!
Most of the times that I’ve stayed on St Simons we’ve stayed with family, but this time we stayed at a hotel. I booked the Best Western Plus simply because I needed a hotel last minute, but I was so glad we did! Imagine a little hotel nestled underneath dripping Spanish Moss with a pool and hot tub, and the hot tub is in a traditional Southern gazebo. It was perfect!
I feel like my husband would appreciate that there was even a station they have set up for washing your motorcycle. We used it to wash the sand off our life jackets and beach toys. The picture below might look like Ford is sitting in some dark sand, but that’s actually really thick brack-mud that was almost impossible to wash off.
During the day, I had all these ideas of fun things we might do, but instead we ended all day every day on the beach. On St Simons, we usually stick to East Beach. It’s got a couple of public access areas with free parking, and even though it’s busy, it’s no where near as busy as other beaches I’ve been to, like Panama City.
We found that Tweety boogie board buried under ivy and logs in our backyard after we cut a bunch of trees down. It must have been owned by someone who had the house before us, but it still had a lot of good use it in. The kids played on it non stop all weekend until it finally starting falling apart. Rest in Peace, boogie board. Thanks for all the fun on our family beach trips.
Rhett has begun learning to write letters and knows how to write two words by memory- “Rhett” and “Mom.” It was super sweet when he ran up and told me to read what he wrote in the sand. In the second picture I showed him how to add the “I” and the heart shape just so my Mom heart could explode a little more. As painful as it is to have your kids grow up, every time they hit a new milestone, like learning to write or ride a bike or something, it makes it so worth it to be able to see them learning and accomplishing new things, like learning that if you all hug each other, than Mom will get her fill of picture-taking and you can all move onto more fun things like sandcastle building.
Like I said, we spent most of our time on the beach, but we did eat one day at the most amazing Mexican Restaurant. We’re going back down in a couple weeks, and I am going to do my best to get pictures of some of the great spots to eat or hang out around the island and write a little weekend getaway guide, but for our little getaway weekend, we had a great time just enjoying the sun and sand. If you live in Georgia or a nearby state and want some ideas for places to stay or eat on Saint Simons, let me know what you’re looking for so I can include it in my weekend getaway guide!

I was sitting at the beach on Saint Simons Island Georgia today looking up info on the different places around here to find shark teeth when I ran across your story about visiting here. I work at Best Western Plus as Night Auditor and Front Desk. I have lived on the Island for 5yrs and love it. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay there. I truly love working there because I get to meet so many people from around the world with great little stories about their travels just like yours.
Anyway talking about sharks teeth, I have just recently started making jewelry, wire wrapping stones and my favorite, wire wrapping sharks teeth to put on necklaces, anklets, and bracelets. If you need or want any of your shark teeth made into jewelry, please let me know. I will leave my email address and you can find me on Facebook as well. I also have some pictures of some I have done if you would like to see them. I look forward to seeing you on your next trip to SSI and Best Western Plus on SSI. Talk to you soon.
