Everytime I have sat down to post lately or share an update, it has been hard to write. Everyone has experienced so many changes and everyone has been affected by Covid19 and it just felt silly writing about our everyday life, and yet that is exactly what this blog started as and so I enjoy sharing that on here still.
Like everyone else, we were mostly at home for the last 5 months, minus the almost four months that I spent coming and going from West Palm Beach Florida so that Toan could get treatments for his Arthrogryposis. He originally was scheduled for just one surgery, which turned into two, which turned into four. Over the course of about 10 weeks, he went from being stuck in a chair position (hips flexed at 90 degrees, knees bent at 90 degrees) and with clubbed feet, to being able to straighten his legs and his feet are in a much better position. The surgeries were intense, the recovery was really hard at times. Looking back, I know that God was helping us through that because it was a lot for him to go through and a lot as a parent to handle and take care of. One week was so incredibly hard that I had enough sense to say I needed a break and Brandon and I swapped places (he came to FL to be with Toan and I went home to be with the other three boys). The good news is, it’s all behind us and we can only go up from here! Toan is standing and walking with assistance and getting stronger everyday. He had never really stood up before so he has so many muscles that never had the chance to work. Some atrophied away so far that we aren’t sure they will ever work again, and some muscles he doesn’t have, but he is figuring out how to work with what he has and it’s an amazing journey to see. I think he finally “gets” it. He gets that all of this hard work is paying off with walking being easier and today he was able to take steps and move his walker all by himself for the first time!
School has started back in and we’re all adjusting to these new school schedules and rules. I don’t think we’ll ever go back to “normal” as it used to be and maybe that’s a fun thing. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the ways that our boys learn this year and the new opportunities that virtual brings to students.
