When my kids wake up in the morning, one of the first things they do, is try and run out the door into our backyard. I absolutely LOVE it, and love that they are running and swinging and digging and and acting like crazy people out there. Emphasis on the digging. I don’t know why digging comes naturally to boys, but it does. From the time they can crawl, they dig, crawl, and sometimes even eat the dirt. It’s just what they do. It’s part of why they need so many changes of clothes and so many baths.
Lately, Rhett has had one pair of clothes in particular that he loves- his PJ masks pajamas. Every morning, he wakes up and begs me not to make him change into real clothes for the day, and pretty soon after, he is out the backdoor, exploring the yard as “Gecko.” Now, not only are these pajamas two sizes too small (because they don’t make them in kid sizes so I haven’t been able to find more as he’s grown up), but they have been through puddles, mud, messy breakfast, and so much more.
Whenever he’s willing to trade his precious pajamas for real clothes for a day, I make sure to wash them while I have the chance. I know I’ve talked on my blog before about how much we love all® free clear detergent, but it has really been put to the test lately.
Every year, we plant a garden in our backyard. When I was growing up, every Spring my Mom assigned each of us a part of the yard that was ours to maintain. Everyone had to help with the big grassy part of the yard, but we also had a garden to keep up. Some of my siblings would choose to do flowers or landscape their portion for the year, but my Mom passed onto me a love for vegetable gardening. I’ve always wanted my kids to appreciate nature and gardening as well, so even though it’s hard sometimes, I try in include them in every step of planting our garden.
This week, we planted our garden for the year, and Gecko himself was there to help, and it wasn’t long before those pj’s were covered in garden soil. Both Rhett and Ford have a tendency to get rashes from detergents and other things, so I am so glad that we have all® free clear detergent so that I don’t have to worry about what I wash his clothes in. It is 100% free of perfumes and dyes, which means he can run out in the yard in the morning and get as dirty as he wants without me worrying about how I can get his clothes clean and protect his sensitive skin. All® free clear detergent is gentle enough that I washed all of my babies clothes in it, and actually is the #1 detergent recommended by dermatologist, pediatricians, and allergist for sensitive skin.
With the kids being in the garden so much this week, I got tired of finding shovels and tools all over the yard, so I decided to put together a little gardening station for my kids.
Supplies- The supplies for this project are pretty simple. You’ll need: Galvanized Bucket, Powered Drill, Screws (we used black drywall screws we had leftover), 3” S hooks, two Iron plumbing floor flanges, two 4” Iron plumbing pipes, two Iron plumbing L bends, and one 3 foot Iron plumbing pipe, plus any gardening tools you want to store or hang.
First, take your drill, and drill holes through the bottom of the galvanized bucket. You don’t want your gloves and supplies to sit in water, so this will allow any rain water to drain out of the bucket right away.
Next, assemble the plumbing pieces and decide where you want them to go. You will screw the L pipes onto each end of the 3 foot pipe, then attach the 4” pipes to the L’s, and then attach the floor flanges to the remaining ends. Hold your bracket up and mark where to want to attach it to the fence. You can drill pilot holes if you choose.
Next, go ahead and screw in one side of the bracket. I screwed the right floor flange in first.
After you’ve attached one side, you’ll want to unscrew the other L bend from the 3 foot pipe, and add your bin and S hooks before screwing it back together and then screwing that side into the wall. Before I put my bin on, I decorated it with a cute “Garden Tours” decal. I originally tried to paint a really pretty design until I found out paint doesn’t adhere to galvanized metal! Let my mistake be your lesson.
Once you’ve screwed in the second flange, your bracket is ready to fill with all your supplies! I love shopping Target’s One Spot Shop for gardening supplies in the Spring. Most of what you see here is from the One Spot Shop, and it is all from Target. While I was there, I also stocked up on more all® free clear detergent. You can never have too much when you know your kids will be getting dirty outside soon.
(since I wouldn’t let him wear his favorite PJ’s to the store, he opted for the goggles instead)
Last, I decided to decorate the fence around my gardening station to make a cute backdrop for our garden. We added some succulents up high, and put flowers in the hanging pots I found at Target.
The boys helped me plant tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, and three kinds of lettuce. Last year I didn’t buy a single bag of lettuce or any tomatoes all summer, it was so nice to be able to just walk outside and get some.
By the end of getting our garden planted for the year, Rhett’s favorite pajamas were ready for the laundry. Thanks to all® free clear detergent, I can spend more time living and having fun with my kids, and less time worrying every time they get messy. I love the mighty pacs, they make doing laundry a breeze.
Thanks to all® free clear detergent, Rhett was back to running around in his favorite jammies once the laundry was done, and back our exploring the world! I can’t wait to see our garden start to flourish and grow, and I really want to build two more garden boxes because they fill up so fast, but I’m not sure what else to plant. What have you had success with in your garden? Anyone have great tips for corn? I tried corn the last three years and didn’t get more than a few ears a year (although the first year the deer got to it.)
